Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program

Mother & Baby Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program

River Root Counseling’s Mother & Baby Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program will start accepting clients in Fall 2022.

The River Root Counseling Mother & Baby Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program is an outpatient program three days a week that includes individual and group therapy, as well as streamlined access to psychiatric services from medical providers. The Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program runs three days a week, for three hours each day.

The Mother & Baby Perinatal Intensive Outpatient program is built for adult parents who are experiencing significant symptoms of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorders, perinatal trauma, eating disorders, and related complications during pregnancy, postpartum, post-adoption, after a loss, or at any point in the adjustment to parenthood. River Root’s Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program offers an increased level of care for when traditional weekly outpatient sessions are not helping you to feel better and return to previous levels of functioning. Our Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program offers a hybrid model, meaning you can participate from anywhere in Ohio virtually, or in person at our office in Uniontown, Ohio.

Our Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program is a unique program in Ohio and the Midwest region of the United States. River Root Counseling’s Perinatal Intensive Outpatient program is the only perinatal-specific intensive outpatient program throughout the state of Ohio, and is one of few like programs in the country.

Program Details

Our Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program meets three days per week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 10am to 1pm. Mothers are welcome to attend with their baby in arms. Our Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program includes the following:

  • Daily skill building groups
  • Daily process groups
  • Individual and family therapy
  • Streamlined access to psychiatry and medication management
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Health and wellness for moms
  • Making your “tribe” of support from professionals and other mothers

In our daily process groups, we utilize a variety of evidence based therapeutic approaches to best meet the needs of our clients. Some of these include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT), all through a trauma-informed lense. Our Ohio-based Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program utilizes creative therapeutic interventions, including arts, yoga, and other beneficial components to improve clients’ overall physical and cognitive functioning. All of the above listed services are provided in-house by River Root’s clinical team, with exceptions given to arts and yoga, in which River Root will contract with local trauma-informed professionals as appropriate.

River Root Counseling’s Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program includes as needed couples or family therapy in addition to individual therapy. Strong and healthy relationships are an important part of parenting. Our couples and family therapy services encourage healthy family structures, including discussion and intervention around defining parental roles, identities, increased knowledge and tools pertaining to mental health in parenthood, and more.

While no two mental health journeys are identical, below are some of the common symptoms our clients may have upon beginning in our Perinatal Intensive Outpatient program:

  • Near-constant worry that cannot be eased
  • Feelings that something bad will happen
  • Intrusive thoughts that are upsetting and persistent
  • Fears of being left alone with your baby
  • Physical symptoms, such as gastrointestinal upset or lack of appetite
  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping when the baby sleeps
  • Excessive crying
  • Irritability and anger
  • Difficulty bonding with your baby
  • “Baby blues” that do not get better
  • Lack of interest in things you previously enjoyed
  • Persistent doubts about your ability to care for your baby
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or hopelessness

FAQ

Everyone in the program has a unique healing journey. The duration of your treatment will depend on your symptoms, personal progress, and preferences. Upon joining the program, you will have an initial intake in which you will work with a therapist to create an individualized treatment plan. We encourage clients to continue treatment until your treatment plan goals have been met, and when you can joyfully embrace parenthood with confidence. Upon completion of the program, clients are encouraged to continue in individual outpatient therapy to receive ongoing support and foster further healing.

No. While we do value and encourage physician involvement, you do not need to have a referral to participate in the program.

We are happy to communicate with your employer or educational institution to advocate for the care you need and coordinate arrangements that make it possible for you to attend treatment with minimal disruptions to your daily responsibilities. However if your school or employer are unaccommodating or if the Mother & Baby Intensive Outpatient Program schedule is simply not a fit for you, then we would recommend seeking support through our outpatient therapy services.

To get started, you can call our main line at 330-595-4563 or contact us here. You will be directed to our admin staff who will assist you  in scheduling your intake and subsequently reserving your spot to begin intensive outpatient services.

Yes, absolutely. In fact, if you are experiencing mental health issues during pregnancy, we highly encourage you to seek support as soon as possible. Doing so will provide the opportunity to receive support before your baby arrives, and will decrease your risk of worsening symptoms after your baby arrives. Decreasing the impact of perinatal mood & anxiety disorders by seeking care during pregnancy is not only best for you, but also your baby and your family.
